What is the Keefer Betting System & Does it Work? - Roulette Strategy Explained

If you’ve ever found yourself talking casino games with a big-shot or a high-roller, you will probably have noticed that they like to discuss their strategies for playing. That can make the idea of something like sports betting or table game strategies seem a little daunting to the less experienced of us. However, that shouldn’t be the case. These kinds of approaches to playing are not as complicated as they sound, and even those staking at the smaller end of the spectrum can use them to back up their play.

In this guide, we’ve broken down one strategy in particular, the Keefer betting system, that you can use at the roulette wheel right here at Stake Casino!

What is the Keefer Betting System & How Does it Work?

The Keefer betting system is one of the few betting strategies that apply almost exclusively to the game of roulette. It came from a book called The Keefer Roulette System, in which Jeremy B. Keefer laid out the approach that he believed would help players be more successful playing games like American roulette in particular, which you can find at Stake.com.

At its core, this is a tweaked version of the Martingale strategy, which puts forward that a player should double their wager every time they lose, and fall back to their initial bet size when they win. However, the Keefer system takes that simple system and decides to make it just that little more complicated, meaning that players have to be a little more focused on what’s occurring down at the roulette table.

Believers in betting systems will tell you that the Keefer is one of a list of grind betting strategies, like Oscar's Grind. It may not return immediate results but the idea is that, over time, it can provide some long-term success to a player. Obviously, this isn’t entirely possible to guarantee as this is a game of chance with a baked-in house edge. However, it does provide some dynamism compared to a flat betting strategy in which a player continues to stake the same amount no matter the outcome.

How is the Keefer System Used in Casino Betting?

First, the player must place bets with another person. They can technically play alone at an online casino, but this strategy is built around placing bets that contradict each other on (almost) even money bets. In the case of roulette, that’s red or black, odds or even - you know the type. This is known as differential betting. Both players should have a wager limit of at least 384 collectively. Now what that 384 is is up to the players, as long as they are sticking to a consistent unit, such as $1.

From there, the first player in the pair will bet 1 unit on their chosen outcome - we’ll go red. If this wins, they do it again. If it loses, they double their bet to 2 units and their partner bets one unit on the opposite outcome - here, it would be black. If a bet is on a losing streak, the player should progress the units as follows: 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, and 192. If it wins, it returns to 1 and the second player will begin to follow the progression. Once any player has reached 192 units, if that bet loses, the game is over.

Keefer Roulette Strategy Example

So, all in all, a little confusing at first but simple enough to get into. But how would a real-life example of this look? We’ve broken down a short example of what it would look like if players were using the Keefer at online roulette.

Player 1 BetOutcomePlayer 2 Bet
1Win0
1Loss0
2Loss1
3Loss1
6Win1
1Win2
1Win3
1Win6

This would continue to play out until the limit of 192 is reached or the players end their session but, as you can see, each side follows the progression depending on whether their outcome wins or loses.

Does the Keefer Roulette Strategy Work?

It’s important to remember that no betting strategy can guarantee that you win or that you achieve profits over time. Games of chance are entirely random and no amount of strategizing can make that any different. However, if you are to use a strategy like this, it’s good to know the pros and cons.

  • Playing both sides keeps losses to a relative minimum

  • Based on a popular strategy in the Martingale system

  • Specific to roulette, so highly specialised

  • Depending on the table limit, the high-end wager may be reduced from 192

  • Requires two players or contradictory betting, unlike strategies like Fibonacci or Paroli

  • The type of roulette can affect the outcome - double zero roulette makes it more likely that both players will lose a round

  • This cannot be easily applied to other games or sports betting, like the Kelly criterion

  • As a negative betting strategy, it can be seen as more volatile unlike something like the 1-3-2-6 betting system

How Does Keefer Betting Differ From the Martingale System?

Ultimately, the main thing that connects the Keefer to the Martingale is that they are both negative progression systems at heart. However, what really sets them apart is that the former of our 2 uses a protective second player or differential betting to try and protect against heavy losses. It also doesn’t follow a linear progression, instead choosing different stages in its units, which is very different to Martingale’s simpler approach.

Roulette Strategy Tips

The Keefer betting system is not the only strategy that can be applied to roulette. Proponents of roulette strategies will point to all sorts of approaches, including the anti-Martingale betting system, which turns its namesake on its head by following a positive progression. Because of that, a good tip is to research these strategies and decide which, if any, would be best for you. At the end of the day, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to playing roulette.

Probably the biggest and best tip is to know your stuff and learn the rules and how to play roulette. It’s no good getting started if you don’t have a good grasp on how to play. This applies to all games, including blackjack, poker, and slots, all of which you can find how-to-guides for on our blog. If you don’t know your American from your European roulette, you’re setting yourself up for disaster. Take the time to get to know what you’ll be playing and even consider using promotions or bonuses to practice your chosen game.
