The FIFA Club World Cup is an international club soccer tournament organised by FIFA, the same organisation responsible for the World Cup. Although it’s not new by any means, the tournament has been updated for 2025, and will now feature more teams, more prize money and bigger and more exciting matches.
However, the expanded tournament will feature multiple slots for each confederation, meaning teams will also enter based on their past performances and current rankings. The format of the competition has also changed, introducing a group stage.
History of FIFA Club World Cup
Although previous attempts had been made to hold a Football World Championship, including an 1887 match between FA Cup winners Aston Villa and Scottish Cup winners Hibernian, it wasn’t until 1909 that a global club football tournament was arranged. The Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy was contested by teams from across Europe and won by the English amateur soccer team West Auckland.
In 1951, the Brazilian FAQ set up the Copa Rio, also known as the World Champions Cup, with the intention of being a club version of the World Cup. However, many of the most renowned European clubs declined to participate and therefore, it didn’t garner as much attention from the world press.
In 1960, the first Intercontinental Cup was held, featuring Real Madrid as the winners of the European Cup and Peñarol as winners of the Copa Libertadores. Real Madrid won the tie and declared themselves world champions. However, FIFA objected, as only European and South American teams were able to compete for the trophy.
In 1999, FIFA accepted that every football confederation has a stable continental tournament and felt it was the right time to introduce a Club World Championship event. The inaugural tournament was held in Brazil and featured two Brazilian clubs (Corinthians and Vaco da Gama), a Premier League side (Manchester United), a Liga MX team (Necaxa), a Moroccan club (Raja CA), a team from La Liga (Real Madrid), a Saudi club (Al-Nassr) and an Australian team (South Melbourne).
The very first Club World Cup featured an all-Brazilian final, which was won by Corinthians. Since then, there have been 12 champions. Real Madrid hold the record as the most successful club with 5 titles, and Spain is the most successful country with a total of 8 titles.
Format & Schedule of FIFA Club World Cup
For the first time, the 2025 Club World Cup will feature a group stage rather than being a straight knockout tournament. Rather than including 7 teams, one from each soccer confederation, the upcoming tournament will have a total of 32 club teams, which are divided up into 8 groups.
Each confederation has a certain number of slots, which are given to the current confederation champion as well as recent winners or top-ranked sides. In addition, the host nation gets an entry for an additional team:
AFC: 4 slots
CAF: 4 slots
CONCACAF: 4 slots
CONMEBOL: 6 slots
OFC: 1 slot
UEFA: 12 slots
Host: 1 slot
During the group stage, each team plays every group opponent once. The top two teams from each group then progress to the round of 16 knockout stage. During the knockout rounds, teams play a single match, with the winner progressing to the next round.
