Sergio Agüero Interview - Football Insights & Predictions

We recently caught up with Argentine legend and Stake Ambassador Sergio Aguero to talk all things 2026 Cup! Discover Kun's exclusive takes on whether this is the greatest Argentina side ever, the Messi vs Mbappé Golden Boot race, conspiracy theories around the tournament, the looming semi-final showdown with England, and what the future holds for Enzo Fernández.

Argentina are through to yet another semi-final, and could see themselves play back-to-back Cup finals. Is this theoretically the best Argentina team of all time?

Without a doubt, it's one of the best. Especially because of its consistency. They won the World Cup in 2022 and now they're in the semi-finals again. Back in 2014, with different players but with Leo leading the team, they also reached the final. It's not easy to get to those stages in three of the last four World Cups. Argentina have managed to do it, and fully deserved it.

What did you make of the Switzerland performance?

I found Switzerland's performance very interesting. They've improved a lot over the last few years, and it showed. I read that until the match against Argentina, they hadn't been behind on the scoreboard in quite some time. Not even during the qualifiers. That says a lot about their consistency and puts them among the strongest national teams in Europe.

Lionel Messi is in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot, and has scored 15 Cup goals since turning 35. Do you think he can win the Ballon d'Or again?

I hope so. What Leo is doing at 39 years old is something I don't think we've ever seen before. He's the team's leader and he keeps surprising everyone.

According to you, who will finish the Cup's top scorer with Kylian Mbappe equaling Messi's total?

They're neck and neck for now, aren't they? What Leo is doing is incredible no matter how you look at it. Just being there is a huge achievement, although it doesn't surprise me. We all know his competitive spirit and his quality. But I'm sure what matters most to him is that the team achieves its goals, not his individual records.

What have you made of Kylian Mbappe's tournament and how much of a threat is he to Argentina's World Cup dream?

Mbappé is having a great World Cup. But I don't like talking about hypotheticals. First, Argentina have to play England, and France will have to face Spain. Let's take it one step at a time.

What do you make of the conspiracy theories that the World Cup is being fixed for Lionel Messi?

I'd rather not even answer... so many pointless things get said. In every knockout match, Argentina had to fight hard to get through to the next round. And against Egypt they were trailing with ten minutes left. Argentina are in the semi-finals because they deserve to be. There's no doubt about that.

What do you think of Argentina's semi-final opponents England? Can the Argentine defence cope with the form of Harry Kane?

It will be a very interesting match against England, who have a great team and top-class players. It'll be a clash between two outstanding teams, exactly what you'd expect from a World Cup semi-final. Argentina have their own strengths: a solid team, Leo, and players of the highest level. I don't think it's about stopping just one player, but about the work of the entire team. England have a great attack with Saka, Gordon and Kane, but Argentina have Julián and Lautaro, who have already scored and shown just how dangerous they are.

With the focus on attack and defence, the midfield battle will be key, does Argentina have enough in midfield to overcome England?

England have a midfield with a lot of quality. Bellingham, Anderson, Rice... But Argentina do too. The team found better balance with the inclusion of Paredes, and we already know the talent of Enzo, De Paul and Mac Allister. It will be a great battle. Having said that, I think it's all about what the team does as a whole. That's where the key lies.

Thomas Tuchel is yet to start John Stones and Marc Guehi together in England's back line. Do you think that's England's defence at its strongest, or is Ezri Konsa a better player than either of them?

They've had some injury problems and have had to make changes. But from what I've seen, they've been consistent defensively, even when Konsa had to play at right-back after Quansah's red card against Mexico. Still, as I said before, it's difficult to analyse just one area of the pitch. At this level, teams need to be consistent in every line if they want to achieve their objectives.

Enzo Fernandez has shown he can still score on the big stage and in important moments. Would it be a big blow to Chelsea and Xabi Alonso if they lost him to Real Madrid or another club?

I don't know what will happen with Enzo's future. Right now I see him fully focused on the World Cup with Argentina, and that's what matters. To achieve your goals, you have to be mentally focused on the next match. And I'm sure Enzo is.
